The Power Of Frederick Douglass

Started by American Intellect Newsdesk

Frederick Douglass transformed his newspaper, The North Star, into a formidable political tool designed to stiffen Abraham Lincoln’s resolve. Douglass recognized that if the fractured nation was ever going to survive and thrive, it had to live up to the profound promises of the Declaration of Independence of 1776. Through his press, Douglass launched relentless editorial campaigns that critiqued Lincoln’s early, hesitant approach to emancipation. He argued that the war could not be won merely by preserving a compromised status quo; it required a total moral renewal rooted in the universal truth that all men are created equal. By mobilizing public sentiment, Douglass pressured Lincoln to abandon pragmatic compromises and anchor his wartime policies in the foundational spirit of 1776. The printing press became the catalyst that forced the presidency to align the nation’s survival with true human liberty.
