Fauci–Wuhan email exchanges Linking Him To Wuhan Laboratory became public mainly through FOIA requests in 2021 and later congressional investigations: 1. January 31–February 1, 2020: Scientists, including Kristian Andersen, discussed with Fauci and others whether SARS‑CoV‑2 showed signs of genetic engineering or might have leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. 2. April 2020: EcoHealth Alliance president Peter Daszak emailed Fauci thanking him for publicly supporting a natural, bat-to-human origin. Fauci replied, “Many thanks for your kind note.” 3. NIH money reached the Wuhan Institute of Virology through EcoHealth Alliance for bat-coronavirus research. The central dispute is whether that work legally qualified as “gain-of-function” research.
