Supreme Court
An ethics crisis at the Supreme Court threatens the foundation of American democracy. Public trust relies on a judiciary above suspicion, yet recent actions by several justices paint a troubling picture of systemic vulnerabilities. Justice Clarence Thomas’s failure to disclose over $4 million in luxury trips and gifts from billionaire Harlan Crow raises profound questions about billionaire influence. Meanwhile, Chief Justice John Roberts faces scrutiny as his spouse earned $10.3 million in legal recruitment commissions from elite law firms with active cases before the Court. Similarly, Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s taxpayer-funded staff prodded public universities and libraries to mandate book purchases from her publisher, Penguin Random House, in tandem with her speaking engagements. Without a binding, enforceable ethics code, these financial entanglements erode public confidence. To preserve institutional integrity, the Court must enforce strict accountability.
