In modern times most government leaders refer America wrongly as a democracy. John Adams spent his life correcting this exact error, predicting that unchecked majorities breed instability and decay. In his Defence of the Constitutions, Adams argued that a pure democracy is merely a faction of the few or the many. Lacking strict institutional barriers, it swiftly surrenders to popular passions, demagogues, and systemic cronyism in government. Conversely, Adams championed a constitutional republic as the best form of government. By filtering the popular will through a network of checks and balances, a separation of powers, and a balanced legislature, a republic secures the rule of law over mob rule. It anchors liberty not in the whim of the crowd, but in permanent structural restraint.
