Is the current conflict In Israel/Palestine a just war of self-defense, or does it constitute a total genocide?

This question drives global debate as Israel faces a political deadlock following the October 2026 elections. This domestic stalemate unfolds alongside intense legal scrutiny regarding military strategy, pre-war policies, and official rhetoric. Severe controversy surrounds the pre-war framework from 2012 to 2023, when Benjamin Netanyahu’s government permitted structured Qatari cash transfers into Gaza. Critics argue this was a deliberate strategy to weaken the Palestinian Authority and block statehood. Netanyahu rejects this, stating the funds were meant to prevent a humanitarian collapse. Further scrutiny focuses on the intelligence failures leading up to October 7, 2023. More than a year prior, intelligence units intercepted the 40-page "Jericho Wall" blueprint detailing Hamas's exact invasion plan. Despite this, explicit alerts from border surveillance teams, and high-level alarms raised by regional allies in mid-2023, senior commanders dismissed the threat as aspirational. The resulting war has inflicted a staggering human toll, with massive military and civilian casualties on both sides. In the global arena, the question of intent is heavily driven by inflammatory rhetoric from far-right Israeli ministers. Public calls by these officials for total destruction and mass displacement have been submitted to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is evaluating these statements as evidence of racist and genocidal rhetoric under international law.
